The story of Oakley
by Mathias Stering on Sep 07, 2022
The brand OAKLEY was founded back in 1975 by a mad scientist with a workshop in his garage, $300 in his pocket, and with a dog by his side named Oakley Anne. James Jannard's business idea was to both aesthetically and functionally improve products that were on the market. He wanted to create art that delivered.
James' first revolutionary product was "The Oakley Grip," a motorcycle handle grip that improved grip when the handle got wet. Then came his first glasses "O Frame Goggle", also mainly created for motocross and motorcycle riders. But an improved lens that was both larger and curved in its construction gave drivers a better field of vision than they ever had before. The glasses were then adjusted to Ski Goggles with adaptations for the alpinists' specific preferences, then it continued to be further developed for every sport imaginable before even James found a shape for lifestyle sunglasses. OAKLEY's customers ranged from extreme athletes, to Michael Jordan and André Agassi, on to Tom Cruise and then spread to every single cone on the block who played golf, surfed, cycled, power walked, mowed the lawn or just had the slightest interest in look cool.
OAKLEY completely took over the development of sports glasses in the 90s and has been the market leader ever since. The company is rooted in a 40-year history of innovation and a philosophy that puts the brand in a class of its own. OAKLEY eyewear is designed for performance. They have constantly furthered themselves by constantly partnering with world-leading athletes in various sports to develop products that specifically meet the demands of performance in their environments. After development, the products have undergone massive tests in demanding environments under extreme conditions to see that they live up to the high demands.
OAKLEY is simply obsessed with the details, as it is exactly what makes the difference between coming 3rd or getting to the top of the podium. The company has received worldwide patents more than 600 times for its various designs. Their development team lives for the feeling they get when they succeed in creating something new. OAKLEY continues to develop by looking to the future, looking for possible problems to immediately anticipate with solutions. The company is obsessed with finding new concepts, challenging itself, reconciling, reviving and reinventing. That is how they have been trusted by those who are forward-thinking and worn by those who are committed. OAKLEY has already made history, and started again.
