Eye health examination

An eye health examination allows us to detect a number of serious age-related changes. If this happens at an early stage, the changes can be treated successfully. Going for a health checkup is a matter of course for most of us. Going for an eye health examination should be just as obvious.

With the help of an advanced fundus camera which, in combination with checking visual acuity, visual field and eye pressure, we get a comprehensive picture of the health of your eyes. We send the images from the fundus photography together with other measurements electronically to ophthalmologists. A complete statement about your vision and eye health is available within a few days.

Common eye diseases that are looked for are, for example:

Gray Starr (Cataract) is an eye disease caused by the lens of the eye becoming cloudy. It varies how long it takes before you yourself feel that your vision has deteriorated. Common symptoms are sensitivity to light and colors being perceived as weak. Cataracts are most common after the age of sixty.

Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by damage to the eye's optic nerve. If you are not treated, the eye's field of vision shrinks, which can lead to blindness. It is very rare to get glaucoma before the age of 50. At the age of 75, about 5% have contracted the disease. If glaucoma is detected in time, there is good hope of slowing the progression.

Changes in the yellow spot (macular degeneration) is an eye disease primarily caused by natural age-related changes in the central part of the retina. The disease can lead to loss of vision, and one can no longer read a newspaper or drive a car due to poorer visual acuity. There are good chances of treatment if the disease is detected early.

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease that can develop if you have diabetes. Due to changes in the retina, you may have blurred vision, cloudiness or spots in the field of vision. It usually happens gradually over a longer period of time, which can make it difficult to detect yourself.

Should the examination show any kind of eye change that could have consequences for your future vision, you will be referred to an ophthalmologist for further examination and treatment. If everything is normal and your eyes look healthy, you will of course be notified of that as well.
