The history of Theo Eyewear

by Mathias Stering on Sep 07, 2022

THEO was founded in Belgium in 1987, by the Somers family who owned two optical shops. They had long felt a hunger that they could no longer deny. A hunger for glasses that didn't look like every other classic and timeless brand. A hunger for arches that stuck out, that could not be found anywhere else. Together with the designer Patrick Hoet, they decided to produce their own collection of glasses under the name THEO. Their vision was to produce something that had a clear edge, breathed individuality, and had a touch of humor.

THEO is extremely proud to collaborate with designers from different areas outside the optics industry when they develop their new concepts. The drive to find inspiration and the beauty in everyday things to inspire and surprise their customers is completely in their DNA. During a trip through Japan, for example, the THEO team got inspiration from all the amazing noodles they ate on a daily basis. The result was a whimsical collection with playful frames that loop and twist around the lens in unexpected ways. Their interest in kiteboarding gave life to a collection where the bows are curved in similar patterns that the sails move in the sky when surfing. Other sources of inspiration over the years have been diamonds, train stations and even desserts.

However, passion for the customer is undoubtedly THEO's primary driving force. Every single person who buys a pair of THEO glasses has different needs, different interests and an individual sense of style. Glasses are an often overlooked part of an individual's personal style, but Patrik Hoet and the Somres family work to make it the first thing people notice. Glasses should be much more than a way to correct vision. It should be a wonderful and playful form of expression.
