The story of Lazare Studio

by Mathias Stering on Apr 02, 2024

LAZARE STUDIO revives picturesque eyewear designs rooted in mid-20th century visual sobriety. With the updated and modern touch of the neo-retro look, Lazare Studio has captured its essence and identity.

Studio

Lazare Studio was officially founded in September 2020 by Alexandre Catons, but his passion for independent eyewear began long before that. Alexandre is a veteran optician since 1999 who opened his very first own optical store in Lyon in 2003, and another in 2010. Right from the start, he started building deeper relationships and partnerships with the brands he himself had in his stores. During the time he observed, was inspired and familiarized himself with how others worked, he himself began to create a vision of how best to combine vintage elements with modern design in what would later become Lazare Studio.

Alexandre Catos tells us that “the name LAZARE STUDIO comes from Lazarus science and popular culture with reference to the restoration of life , as Saint Lazarus was the first to be resurrected according to church tradition. I like the idea of reviving classic bows in a modern style.”

STUDIO is a studio for filmmaking, architecture, design, carpentry, sculpture, painting, etc. According to Catons, LAZARE STUDIO is a real study environment in the sense that they design each component, draw each of their models, develop their own exclusive technical parts and all manufacturing processes specific to the brand in-house.

Durability

LAZARE STUDIO is committed to environmental and social responsibility. They put a lot of effort into identifying first-class suppliers who work with care and conscience, choosing environmentally sustainable and durable materials, designing timeless eyewear models, creating elegant and environmentally friendly packaging and setting fair prices. Lazare's goal is to offer everyone sustainable glasses.

Manufactured in Japan and France

The production of all Lazare bows is split between Japan and France to ensure the strict respect for tradition and craftsmanship that Alexandre strives for. The exclusive signature components are made from proven materials from premium Japanese manufacturers. The acetate undergoes a complex processing designed to prevent heating of the acetate during manufacture resulting in a much higher stability of the bow.

However, the final adjustments to the frames always take place at home in France, where the glasses are put together with selected components exclusively designed and manufactured by Lazare Studio themselves. The final touch applied is their trademarked technology, "futureproof", a specific hinge that integrates components that minimize friction, ensuring maximum durability.

Japanese craftsmanship and neon retro

The vision behind each pair of LAZARE STUDIO glasses is to reunite two worlds that naturally do not meet without Alexandre's existence. Exclusive objects made from ancient materials by Japanese artisans meeting the unparalleled expertise of the eyewear workshops located deep in the French Jura Mountains where the brand is headquartered. This is where Alexandre mixes old knowledge with cutting-edge technologies to make the exclusive glasses Lazare Studio builds its identity on.

The eye-catching feature of Lazare Studio design is the modern touch of vintage style that can be called neo-retro. The inspiration for this style is not exclusively drawn from Art Deco, Art Nouveau, or the like, but instead reinterprets a wide range of styles and graphic elements from different moments in design history. This results in a freer and more playful design language that is evident in every model and frame. Physiological design strategy, well-balanced lines and weight with a focus on perfect comfort for each customer.

Alexandre says he feels “a great attraction towards the 60s to 80s when there was a great desire for freedom and glamour. Big provocative shapes for the women and bold, challenging frames for the men at night…..without ever denying my love for traditional classics during the day!”
